From: The VSCCA Board of Directors

Our VSCCA year has gotten off to a wonderful start with our two winter "Tech" events in March and track events at Lime Rock and Pocono in April. Both track events were incident free and we trust that this sets the standard for the rest of the year.

Your Board of Directors is considering several issues of car preparation that have a bearing on the very nature of the VSCCA. The primary purpose of this letter is to inform our membership of an action we are taking imediately on one of these. Others will be addressed in the near future.

At Pocono on April 19, those present observed 13 cars with inappropriate modern racing seats and at least 4 cars with seriously gutted interiors.

Seats are a part of the original appearance and vintage character of our cars. Last year, during all of the ongoing discussions, all members who weighed in were in agreement that if seats were not original, they should look period (the period being pre-1960). Many modern racing seats have high backrests and protruding shoulder bolsters. Nothing looking like these seats was available in the 1950s. Since they alter the original appearance and vintage character of a car, such modern racing seats are therefore not VSCCA eligible. (As an aside, apart from looks, a portion of the vintage driving experience in many of our cars is figuring out how to brace yourself - that's character!) If your car has a roll bar all roll bar hoops should have a cross member with a padded headrest. On roll bar equipped cars this is VSCCA appropriate, and precludes any perceived need for a seat with a high back. If your car is not equipped with a roll bar, The seat must still be original or period looking. The rationale for all of this can be found in the Modifications pamphlet that is sent to every new member and was recently mailed to all members.

Since it is a relatively simple matter to replace a seat, eligible seats will be required beginning at our event at Lime Rock with the Jaguar Club on May 30 & 31.

Those who present their cars with modern racing seats that are not period looking will not be allowed to run in the VSCCA portion of this event and subsequent VSCCA events. Gutted interiors will be addressed on an individual basis, as we realize it may take some time to locate proper trim bits.

Please also note that Lime Rock has very strict noise levels. Cars that are too loud will be black flagged (by the track, not us).

Happy vintage motoring.
