VINTAGE SPORTS CAR CLUB OF AMERICA, INC.,

Dear Member,

15 February 2001

The document which is the VSCCa's guide to allowable Modifications was developed years ago by Gary Ford, then Chairman of the Car Classification Committee. It is sent to all new members as part of their club information packet. Your Board of Directors believes the 'Modifications leaflet' has stood the test of time very well, and is redistributing it at this time for the information of those members who may have misplaced it.

Yours sincerely,

Enclosure

Modifications

The following general restrictions regarding modification. updating, or altering of VSCCA eligible cars have been developed by the Car Classification Committee with the approval of the Board of Directors to expand on the previously enunciated principle that a car may be modified only in accordance with the style and spirit of the time it was built and raced, using no equipment that was not available at that time.

These rules do not cover every situation, nor is it thought that they could or should be made to do so. Neither are they intended to replace the judgment of the Car Classification Committee, which retains the responsibility (a) to rule in individual cases, and (b) to interpret these and all other car classification rules of the club when specific questions arise. Rather, these rules are issued to provide the member-ship with a working definition of the general limits within which cars may vary from absolute originality and still be eligible for VSCCA events.

Compliance with originality provisions of this memo is expected to be near perfect for cars of the late fifties. Allowances will be made for older cars and particularly for pre-war cars as long as substitute components are from the same era. The object is to encourage preservation of cars in their original state without limiting the opportunities for participation by early cars with irreversible or essential modifications. ENGINE Engine modifications substantially affecting performance will not be permitted. Engines are to retain original displacement, carburation, and moving parts, except where replaced with alternate parts available at the time of manufacture or competition. Minor changes regarding the electrical system, and the fuel system, will be allowed. All proposed engine swaps must receive prior approval by the Car Classification Committee.

SUPERCHARGING

Forced induction systems will be permitted only on cars which used superchargers prior to 1960. The equipment used must be of the same make and type as used originally.

SUSPENSION

The location and basic configuration of suspension components may not be altered. Original equipment may be replaced with newer equipment where original parts are not readily available.

BRAKES

Brake systems may not be altered radically, e.g. hydraulic for mechanical or disc for drum, but may be updated for safety with regard to lining or pad material, brake lines or fittings.

WHEELS

The wheels should conform to original (or listed optional) specifications. In cases where original sizes and styles are not available, substitute wheels of the same diameter and within f inch of original rim width may be used. Any change in material of construction must be toward additional strength rather than less weight.

TIRES

The tires used should be the same size used originally. Either modern street tires or period type racing tires will be permitted - provided they do not exceed the tread width dimensions listed for Dunlop Vintage or "L" series racing tires - in the applicable size.
FUELS

No oxygen bearing fuels will be permitted.

APPEARANCE

The outward appearance of the car shall be kept original within the general restrictions mentioned above. The interior shall not present the impression of having been "gutted".

NON-PERFORMANCE MODIFICATIONS

The addition of equipment intended only to enhance driver safety or improve mechanical reliability will be permitted. Such changes must not substantially alter the original appearance or vintage character of the car.

FORMULA CARS

All Formula cars shall conform to the original specifications of their formula.

SPECIALS

In certain cases, cars which have been substantially modified from their original specification, and raced in this form prior to 1960, may be approved. Each such case will be considered by the Car Classification Committee on an individual basis, on application by the owning member.

ENFORCEMENT

The general restrictions above will be enforced by club officials at each event. Serious violations will result in disqualification, or a canceled entry. Minor violations will be discussed with the entrant, who shall have the responsibility to correct such violations prior to entering the next event. Rulings may be subsequently appealed to the Car Classification Committee.

Modifications

All questions, comments or suggestions regarding these guidelines should be directed to the Car Classification Committee,
