Many of our members are aware of the plight of our Honorary Member, John
Fitch. Last year he discovered that an underground oil tank on his
property in Falls Village CT had sprung a leak. He did the right thing
and reported it it to the Connecticut Department of Environmental
Protection, had the tank removed and the contaminated soil dug up. His
well and the wells of his neighbors have been tested and found clear.
The DEP has gone after John with a vengeance, resulting in a situation
that may require a vast expenditure of resources (monetary and
otherwise) out of all proportion to the nature of the problem.
John is not a wealthy man and is currently paying for nursing home care
for his wife, Elizabeth, which is very expensive.
John has retained an excellent lawyer, and The Friends of Fitch
Homestead Fund has been set up to assist John to discharge the
environmental and related financial obligations associated with the fuel
oil contamination on his property.
IRS rules prevent the VSCCA from contributing directly to this fund from
our treasury, but individual members are invited to contribute.
Our own Bob Richer, long time VSCCA member and former President, is one
of the administrators of this fund along with John's two sons.
Contributions from our members can be sent to the "Friends of Fitch
Homestead Fund" at the Salisbury Bank and Trust Co., 5 Bissell St.
Lakeville, CT 06039.
Checks should be made out to "The Friends of Fitch Homestead Fund".
John Fitch with Sam Posey & Skip Barber.
Anything our members can do to help John out will be much appreciated.
