The VSCCA has always bucked current trends. The enthusiasts who started our Club in 1958 saw the SCCA becoming more and more competitive and professional. The VSCCA came about to preserve the great cars of past years and to keep the spirit of strictly amateur competition among friends.
In 2005, the VSCCA still bucks current trends. Vintage/Historic racing has become very big business. Some Vintage/Historic series are highly competitive and accept cars that are not too far away from being contemporary. There is nothing wrong with this. The broad spectrum of the current Vintage/Historic scene provides something for enthusiasts of every stripe.
By the end of this year, the newest sporting car eligible for VSCCA speed events will be 45 years old. Our Club exists to keep these cars going and to keep enthusiasm for the pre-1960s eras of motorsport on our front burner. The VSCCA still provides an alternative for friends to gather and drive these old cars of great character in as close to their original specification as possible in the spirit of friendly, low key competition. Our Club is not for everybody, but it is a viable niche (just as there are many viable niches in the old car hobby - From Brass era cars or Edsels or Mazda Miatas (yes, some of them are getting old now) again, there is something for every car nut .
If racing old cars per se were our only reason for being, then we would be ill advised not to follow the crowd. The tunes we march to are the melange of sounds of a supercharged Bugatti or the rumble of an Allard or the crisp roar of a Coventry Climax. It is the preservation and use of the cars that make these tunes that is our reason for being, not to see which one can be driven faster than another, which after all, is the point of racing. The finishing order of most VSCCA speed events can be pretty accurately predicted before the green flag drops. The order is not important, the finishing is.
As we enter this New Year, we are thankful that the tragedies of the wider world are so far sparing us and that we can again look forward to another season of enjoying our hobby with our friends.
Happy Vintage Motoring in 2005

John
